At the heart of Champsaur
The history of the Ancelle municipality (900 inhab in 2014) began on the peak of the Mount Saint-Philippe, flanked by the ruins of a tower on the site of the ancient village of Faudon, near an old Roman road.
We don't know the date of foundation of this communauty, but it could be older than the city of Gap. Archeological digs allowed to discover artifacts old of 400 to 600 years B.C. (bracelet, fibula, polished axe).
Then the village has been moved to the place-called 'Le Château d'Ancelle' in the 13th century, before to settle in the current chef-lieu in the following century. The Faudon family, also called "les Seigneurs d'Ancelle", died out in the 16th century. Some ruins of the castle are still visible at the cemetery.
